This road project involves the expansion and tarmacking of an existing 179 km-long unpaved road linking Ebolowa and Kribi in southern Cameroon. This road runs close to the northern edge of the Campo Ma’an National Park. This area harbors populations of the Endangered central chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and the Critically Endangered Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) occurring in sympatry both within and outside this national park. The Italian group ICM Construction Limited, the project developer, and their consultants, contacted ARRC in 2022 at the lender’s request to align with IFC PS6. The ARRC Task Force is providing advice on great ape baseline surveys as well as their mitigation strategy for great apes.
