Nimba Iron Ore Project
Iron ore mining & railway
Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG)
The Nimba Iron Ore project is a proposed iron ore mining project in the Nimba Mountains of the Republic of Guinea, with an associated railway that will be needed to export the ore through Liberia. The project will have negative impacts on Critically Endangered western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). The rights to the project are owned by Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG), with the majority of shares owned by High Power Exploration (HPX), and the remaining shares owned by the Government of Guinea. The project is currently in the feasibility and planning process, and is planning to submit its ESIA in 2022. The life of the mine is expected to be 15-25 years. The ARRC Task Force was contacted by SMFG in 2020 to align its activities with IF PS6, however the ARRC Task Force refused to engage (see reasons for not engaging in the document below).
